Update on new RebornFX Ultra Matte Varnish and Matting Powder

Oh my, how time flies! I've gotten behind in my blogging as life rushes on....
Thought I'd better update this blog on the newer products that have been developed in the Rebornfx line that I have been having fun testing out.
First off Rebornfx has come out with their Ultra Matte Varnish.  Now this stuff is " awesome"
It leaves an ultra matte finish with no shine AND it also leaves a really silky feel to it. I love it! A little does go a long way. I did a 20" reborn and you could hardly see I used any out of the 4 oz. jar.

You do have to ensure you stir the stuff before using as the matting agents do sink to the bottom of the jar when it sits for a while. Easy to apply, just add it to your dense cosmetic sponge and lightly pounce(hard pouncing may leave bubbles) onto your finished reborn doll. It goes over air dry acrylics and heatset paints. Ensure your paints are fully dried/cured before applying. Paint that is still wet underneath can cause the varnishes to go cloudy. Let air dry for at least 24 to 48 hours for full protection.  Here is a sample picture of what my reborn painted vinyl looked like on the right and then I added on one coat of the Rebornfx Ultra Matte Varnish on the left side.

The feel of the dried Rebornfx Ultra Matte Varnish  is unbelievably smooth and silky.

The next  new Rebornfx product is the Matting Powder. The Rebornfx Matting Powder can be added into acrylic air dry paints (including the Rebornfx Air Brand paints) to help take away paint gloss.

You do have to be mindful to mix according to directions and not to add to much. Adding to much can affect the binding properties of your paint or if not mixed well  it may leave powder dots.  I think this product has great advantages for using with acrylic paints in reborning.

New set of Rebornfx color selection

Announcing New Colors in Rebornfx paints. 
Due to requests from former Babyfx paint users, we decided to produce some comparible pigment colors from the discontinued Babyfx paints in the Rebornfx air dry paint line. This will help reborners who have used or are still using the discontinued Babyfx paints to still have some of their favorite colors available in another air dry paint brand. This also eliminates the hassle and time consuming task of mixing your own paint colors. Here is a list of the new paint colors that are now available at MacPherson Arts & Crafts

I had not tried the Babyfx paints, so I found these new colors interesting to use. The Caramel Skin has a nice warm glow and is great for fixing up or neutralizing  grayish or bluish  skin tones. The Strawberry skin is great for new born skin tones and also works well with neutralizing orange or yellow toned vinyl.
Thin skin color works well on toning down red and can be used as a neutralizer for pink vinyl.  If your skin tones end up to light for your liking, the Sun Kissed paint is great to slightly darken down your skin tones.  These colors are great for adding a mottled skin tone as well. I can imagine that there are many uses for these new Rebornfx colors!   
The reborn doll picture is one I am currently working on using Angie Jones's Babyfx Peach Skin Tutorial (LilDumplins Nursery). I found it easy to substitute the Babyfx colors in the tutorial with the Rebornfx paints.

New RebornFX Paint Kits

We have been busy making up some new Rebornfx Paint kits.
The first kit that has been completed and is currently up for sale on the website is the Calligraphy Hair Painting Kit. This kit includes the instructions and all the tools including a 3D medium sample. needed neatly packed into a plastic carrying case. ReBornFX Spray Sealer

I have not yet had the chance to use pigment powders as part of my reborn painting method, but many others do. It has interested me to the point  that  now I have officially put it onto my bucket list to try. The new Reborn FX Spray Sealer was created for use with the pigment powders and pastels (thanks to one of our clients who came up with this idea for us). The Rebornfx Spray Sealer seals in the powders with it's great adhesion and has a  UV light protectant in it to minimize color fading. I had an interesting conversation with a customer at the IDTS show on how she was going to try a mixture of our Reborn FX  Sealer, Diluent and paints to put into her airbrush machine for application. This really took my interest so I am hoping to hear back from her on this intriguing method of painting reborns.  



Light Refective Paints by RebornFX

One of the newest product by Rebornfx is a set of Reflective Paints that are now available in Peach, Blue and Gold colors in half once size bottles.
These paints are fun and I can see many uses for them on the reborn dolls. Yes they would be great for fantasy dolls but look at what they can do to liven up the more realistic reborns!
The Rebornfx Blue Reflective paint is awesome for applying to thin skin areas such as in the ears, temples, eyelids, bottom of feet and palm areas. The Rebornfx Reflective paints do not "sparkle". They reflect a color when a light hits them in a certain way.
Here is a picture of an ear that I had painted with the Rebornfx Blue Reflective paint.

The light is shining on the inner ridge of the ear, reflecting the blue hue of the paint.

I applied 1 layer of undiluted Rebornfx Blue Reflective paint onto that area and found it to be perfect for the result I wanted. If the color is not strong enough for your preference then a second (or more) layer can be applied to enhance the reflective color. If you want the reflective color to be very subtle then mix in a bit of Rebornfx Diluent or Emulsion before applying.  

 

 

In the next picture below the light is not shining onto that area so there is no reflected blue color seen.

The paint may appear a bit shiny in these pictures but it is not. I applied a satin varnish on the inner ear to make it look "dewy" but you can also apply a matting agent on top of the paint and the color reflection will still occur.

 

As for the ReBornfx  Peach and Gold Reflective paints, they are great for applying under a thin mottled layer of skin color. It illuminates the skin color creating more realism. The Rebornfx Peach reflective paint is good for fair skin tones and the Rebornfx Gold reflective paint is good to use with the darker or warmer skin tones.

I am impressed with the results and versatility of these RefornFX Reflective air dry paint colors.

And oh yes I should remind you that they can be used overtop or under heat set paints.

I am indeed having fun experimenting with these paints on my reborn life like dolls. Would love to see what they can do on fairies or fantasy dolls as well.

Preparing Spanish Vinyl for Painting. RebornFX Paints on Clay Sculpts.

Well it's been a while since I posted here, but boy have we been busy! Basically most of the time was spent preparing and packing to attend the IDTS show in Asheville North Carolina. The show was excellent and the Rebornfx paints proved to be a great success. I did a lot of painting demonstrations and answered many questions on the product. To my surprise I also got a lot of excellent feed back and great tips on how some of the products are being used by other artists. Here are a few of them I would like to share with you;

1) The Rebornfx paints are now being used on resin ,heat set clays and porcelains. Although I have not tried the paints out on these different surfaces (yet), their claim is that the adhesion,  blending properties and color selection of the paints are excellent. Rebornfx paints worked well with the artist's method of painting on these other types of surfaces. The sculptors are happy with it as the paint doesn't need to be heat set and therefore their precious sculpts do not have to be put back into the ovens to dry paint.

2) The Rebornfx paint remover (more description on product in previous post) is now being recommended to clean off the Spanish vinyl babies before painting. It was very successful in getting rid of the vinyl residue that seems to be causing some paint lifting with the heat set and air dry paints. Once this method of cleaning is done you will notice the vinyl is "squeaky" clean and you can feel a slight tooth (not rough) to the vinyl. This will now allow the paints to adhere better. I love the Spanish vinyl for reborns as it is very soft and flexible. So I was very happy to hear this excellent tip.




The paint remover is applied with a cloth , gently rubbing in the remover onto the Spanish vinyl. No need to wait the recommended 15 minutes ( required for stripping paint off) , just a minute or two will do for this cleaning process. Rinse with water then do a wash with Dawn Soap and water. I also used a soft bristle toothbrush to clean between the toes, fingers and other creases.






We have some great new products that we introduced at the IDTS show this year. I will be posting about them shortly. Non Toxic ReBornFX Paint Stripper

I hate the times when a reborn baby I am painting just doesn't turn out the way you intended it to. I am sure many of you have experienced this dilemma as well. Sometimes the only recourse is to strip off all the paint and just start over. Most of the paint strippers used for reborn dolls are very toxic eg. Acetone and WNB cleaner. This creates quite a problem for me as I live in a rural area with a septic tank and weeping bed = so no toxins can go down the drain in my house.   I do like to help preserve our environment as much as I can and I do not like to handle toxins in fear of it absorbing into my sensitive skin and causing health issues. I was so happy to find out the Rebornfx Paint Remover was both non toxic and environmentally safe. I was able to use the product with out using rubber gloves and a mask!  It does have a orange/lemon odor but that did not bother me. I tried the product on the Rebornfx air dry paints , on the Genesis and  Heat Set paints and it did remove both types of paint.
I am going to post the instructions below on how I used the Rebornfx paint remover. The product also includes a Scrubbie wedge to help remove stubborn areas of paint with out scratching the vinyl.

Basic Instructions for Rebornfx Paint Remover

1. Pour some ReBornFX Paint Remover into a small container. With the flat brush, apply a thick coat of the paint remover onto your vinyl pieces.

 

2. Lightly mist the inside of your glass bowl and towel with water. Put your vinyl pieces onto the damp towel and put bowl on top. This keeps the paint remover solution moist to help activate it more. If the ReBornFX paint Remover has dried then reactivate it by applying more Remover solution or water on

 

3. Leave paint remover on for 15 minutes when removing heat set paints. Paint remover may remove

acrylic paints with in 7 to 10 minutes. Timing will depend on how many layers of paint is on your vinyl pieces. You may test to see if paint is lifting by rubbing with a cloth.

4. Remove the Bowl and fill with warm tap water . Add a few drops of Dawn Dish Soap.

5. Take the vinyl piece and wipe with the cloth rag. With pressure, paint will start to come off the vinyl.

You may also scrub areas that are not removed with a cloth with a toothbrush.
A second application of paint remover may be required for some hard to remove areas of paint.

6. Once the majority of paint has been removed , a Scrubby wedge or Sand Eraser will help get into small crevices to remove paint. Wooden toothpicks are also helpful for getting paint out from between fingers and toes, but be careful not to scratch the vinyl.

7. Once all paint is removed, give your vinyl pieces a good washing with clean water

and Dawn Dish Soap. Then rinse soap off thoroughly.  Your piece will be ready to paint when dry.
  

 

Hair painting colors

 

I have to admit, I've been slacking off on blogging lately as I have been enjoying time with my new grandchild born on May 17th. So I will take a few minutes today to try and catch up....

There are now 1 ounce bottles of air dry Reborn FX colors  available for Hair painting;

Here is my recommendation for painting the following hair types;

Blonde Hair ; Rebornfx air dry paints; Harvest Cream, Blonde, Dark Blonde

Brunette Hair ; Rebornfx air dry paints; Light Burnt Umber, Burnt Umber, Dark Burnt Umber

Ash Brown Hair ; Rebornfx air dry paints; Light Ash Brown, Ash Brown, Dark Ash Brown

Red Tone Hair: Rebornfx air dry paints; Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber - Warm Creases also makes nice red tone highlights.

 

Remember you can use RebornFx Air dry paints on top of Heat set paints. Apply RebornFx primer first and finish off with your favorite sealer or varnish in heat set or air dry.  

Calligraphy Painted Hair with ReBornFX air dry paints

I still have a lot of practicing to do to get myself to that professional painted hair "realistic" look on my reborns but I thought I'd blog a bit on my journey with painting hair.  One of the challenges I have had in the past was to get my painted lines thin,  being able to control the paint , to go where I wanted it to go and not where it happened to land! If you have attempted painting hair on a vinyl doll head you will probably recognize my challenges with this. Some paints tend to resist the surface causing sparsely painted areas or paint blobs happening and this can be very frustrating.  Another past challenge was thinning the paints to the right consistency to prevent the paints from running and containing the color strength I wanted. Well I have to say I have finally got a method of painting hair with out having these challenges and I am now really enjoying the painted hair process. I still need to practice my patterning but at least I can now have more control over the paint application with out becoming to frustrated.
Here is now my hair painting method that works great for me........

Ok, so the first thing I will tell you is that I am going to use a calligraphy nib to paint with and I (of coarse) I will be using the Reborn FX paints. I can just hear some of the Reborners scream " No no no!!! you will scratch that babies head with it!"  but the truth is, with the special soft nibs I use (from MacPherson Arts and Crafts store)  the vinyl does not get scratched at all. These nibs flex very easily and do not have a needle like point ( more like a small round point)  These nibs do give you very fine or thick lines depending on your pressure points.

The second important information is that I will be using the Rebornfx air dry paints and diluting them down easily to the right consistency for the nibs to hold with out the paints becoming runny. I also found the Rebornfx paints to have good color strength even after thinning. The Rebornfx air paint premixed line now has a few new hair colors you can choose from....

 

I will be using the ReBornFX Dark Ash Brown and the ReBornFX Ash Brown colors in my demo.

 

The vinyl doll head I will be using has been painted with Heat set paints so the first thing I will do is apply the Rebornfx air dry primer on the head where I am going to paint on and then wait for it to completely dry for a few hours. The Primer is important to use as it give a bit of tooth to your surface so the paint doesn't resist or puddle up, allowing for nice smooth continuous hair lines. This technique can also be done on air dry painted reborns before a water base varnish is applied.

Next Step: Plan out your hair pattern.  Here I have drawn on a few lines with chalk as a guidance on where I want to apply the paint for hair sections or tresses.  White chalk comes off very easily and will not discolor your paint or vinyl.

With thinned Rebornfx Ash Brown loaded  onto the calligraphy pen I applied the hair tresses within my pattern guide lines  . I like to work on the top head section first to get a good hair pattern going. If you push down on the pen to much the nib will open and release to much paint, so light pressure is all that is needed. I felt I had more control with using this pen vs a brush. It was also easy to hold and maneuver around. I also got to paint more hair lines with out stopping to load up with paint vs with a fine brush. So I felt is was a bit faster for painting as well.

The next step I did was to take a small brush and load it up with a thin wash of the Rebornfx Light Ash Brown and applied it with in the hair tresses sections. This softened the hair lines and made it look nicely blended into the scalp as well as defined the hair tresses more.

 

 

I then loaded the calligraphy pen with thinned Rebornfx Dark Ash Brown and applied it at the top of the tresses to create shadow and density.

You will notice I am starting to connect my top hair section to the sides now. I also changed to a smaller pen nib to give me some very fine lines on the sides as shown below. I also added a bit of light flesh paint hair lines on the sideburns.

This is how far I have gotten for now. I am liking the density and separation of the tresses so far. This is enough detail for now on the top of the head , so I will now go on to painting in the rest of the hair on the head. Once all the hair is placed in, then I will reassess where I want to add more details, highlights or shadows and then apply.

After I am finished I can choose to seal and varnish with Air Dry Rebornfx mediums or with a heat set medium such as Genesis Satin Medium. Rebornfx paints will withstand the heating process required for heat set paints with out changing color.

 



 





 

RebornFX now has 60 colors available!

Great announcement; the ReBornFX  premixed air dry paint line has now reached  its' 60th color! We just added a new color called Harvest Cream today and will soon be put on the website https://macphersoncrafts.com/en/online-store/rebornfx/rebornfx-air-dry-paints/results,46-105
for purchase. A color swatch is posted in the new products tab on this blog. The color is a very creamy light yellow with just a touch of green reflection. It is good to use when you want to add a soft yellow hue to blend into your skin tones. As a mottle color it helps to break up the reds and when used as a wash it can soften blushed areas. It also is great as a high light color in blonde painted hair.
I am definitely going to give this new color a try and will post my pictures when completed.
ReBornFX air paints are going strong and will still be adding more new colors to their line!

 

Cleaning and Preparing Vinyl for painting

I am getting ready to paint another vinyl doll and thought I'd post what I do to prepare the vinyl doll parts before painting them. There are many different types of vinyl's that come from various reborn doll kit factories around the world. I have found some doll kits to be very "clean" and easy to prepare and some are a bit dirty and need more attention to cleaning off residues. With my experience from helping inspect ( at work ) a ton of vinyl doll parts coming in from a wide variety of doll factories, I can tell you I have not come across  a  factory that has a total "clean vinyl " record. There are times when you may have a good run of really clean looking doll vinyl parts from a factory that impresses you and then the next run from that factory that impression can change. Taking this information into account, I now thoroughly clean my vinyl pieces on every kit before I paint them regardless of which factory produced them. After many hours of painting I do not want to chance finding out the paint won't stick to an area due to an oily residue that I did not see and take the time to clean off before hand. It really doesn't take that long to do a thorough cleaning and I feel it is small task well worth the effort in the end.
So here is my cleaning procedure and a recipe for my cleaning solution that has worked for me for many years.

The supplies you will need are;

1 soft bristled tooth brush

1 tsp of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate U.S.P.)

3 Tbls of Dawn dish detergent

1 small container

Warm water

Soft towel



 

 

I mix the baking soda and dish detergent into the small container to make a soft paste.

The Dawn dish detergent has a great grease cutting ingredient that works well on the vinyl. You may try other brands of dish detergent, but make sure it is not loaded with hand softening oils.  I added in the baking soda to get more of a soft abrasion to help loosen any stuck on dirt or oils. It also helps reduce any odor from the vinyl. The baking soda did not scratch or leave marks in the vinyl.

 

 I then apply this cleaning paste onto the vinyl doll parts and then lightly scrubbed it all over.
 Ensure you scrub in-between the toes, fingers and other creases or crevices.

 

Rinse off the paste thoroughly with warm water. Some times a second rinse is necessary to get all the soap residue off the vinyl. Very warm water helps remove the residue better than cold water. The warm water also helps to open up the vinyl "pores" aiding in releasing trapped oils. As to how warm the water is = it is as warm as your hands can comfortably take. Do not scald yourself with water that is to hot to handle!

 

Dry off the vinyl parts with a soft absorbent towel. I do not use paper towels as I found that they often leave lint or "fuzzies" behind after use.

I  now put my vinyl doll parts onto a rack to dry for a few hours. This ensures any missed wet areas have a chance to air dry. Some times if I am in a hurry to paint right away, I will use a hair dryer on low or cool heat setting to quicken this secondary air drying procedure.

 

I should also mention Do Not get the inside of the vinyl parts wet as it is very hard to get the insides completely dry. If the inside ends up being moist for a long period of time, it can cause mold growth. Something you really do not want to take a chance on happening so try your best not to get water inside the vinyl doll parts. One tip to use if you want to help keep the water from getting into the parts;  Cover the holes by placing a piece of plastic over the flange and secure with an elastic. This will help make it water resistant from drips. It will not work if the area is submerged under water.

 

 

 

 



Using a reborn for Decorating

Had a busy weekend with my family for the Easter Holidays. My home was host to a baby shower for my daughter who is expecting in May. This will be my first Grand child. We made a diaper cake for the table center piece and used my painted reborn Marlee (sculpt by M.Winters) as the cake topper. It was a great conversational item and my daughter adored it.

Fixing a vinyl hole with 3D medium

I decided to try out the RebornFX 3D medium to fill  a hole that was left from a bubble in the vinyl at the back of the neck. Found out it worked out well! Usually I would fill any holes with the heat set vinyl putty medium but I didn't want to heat my vinyl up. That is why I decided to try out the 3D medium for this. I sticks onto the vinyl permanently and is very flexible once air dried.  Here are a few snap shots of my experiment.

Filled the hole with the RebornFX 3D medium and blend out over and around the hole area.

 Left to air dry over night then painted a few skin tones on top. After paint was dry, I bent the neck area and flexed it a few times. All held together with no cracking.

Since the 3D medium worked to well with adhesion and filling in a hole, I decided to apply a thin layer of the ReBornFX 3D medium onto this thin layer of vinyl on the ear lobe. This will reinforce this thin vinyl area to strengthen and prevent any punctures.

London Doll show

This past weekend I was helping in a booth at the London Ont. Doll and Teddy Bear Show. It was a great show with good attendance. Here are a few of the painted reborn dolls that were up for sale in the booth I was helping in.

 

 A few times when the booth wasn't busy I got to work on my Gabriela Toddler Doll nails. That was one of the high lights and advantages of working with the Rebornfx Air dry paints. It is very portable and you can use it almost anywhere with out depending on having a heating oven or heat gun as you do with the Genesis Heat Set paint. I enjoyed this opportunity to paint Gabriela's nails and found it very convenient to use.

 

 

I was pleasantly pleased with a customer's (Ruth from Blessed Baby Creations) results from using the Rebornfx air dry 3D medium for enhancing her dolls nail tips. She claimed it was very easy to apply and she loved the results as well. I think they look great!

 





Finishing skin layers with ReBornFX paints

I got to apply the last layer of skin onto my toddler doll Gabriella. The color I used was a mix of Rebornfx Flesh 07  and Rebornfx Caramel Cream. About 20 % was the Flesh 07 in the mixture. I then added in 50% Rebornfx Emulsion medium and 25% Diluent as I wanted this layer to be very transparent. This was applied with a torn cosmetic sponge, pouncing lightly. You should still see all your blushing and creases through this. If not then it is to strong and you need to dilute the paint mix more with Emulsion or Diluent. Do not apply this onto the bottoms of the feet, palms, lips or nails.  the next step was to paint on the eyebrows. This seemed easier for me to do on a large head and getting them to match the first attempt was exciting.  The colors I used for the eyebrows were Rebornfx Burnt Umber and Rebornfx Light Ash Brown to match the hair wig. The brow hairs were applied with a very fine liner. Once dry I then added on a layer of Matte Fluid to reduce any shine then I applied the Sealer to all areas. The only thing I will be working on to finish her is the nails and assembling.  For now I tried on the wig I have for her. Here is the result of my painting of the head and torso so far.

Painting skin undertones with ReBornFX paint

Today I was able to complete some undertone colors before applying more skin color layers.
The first was a blue shade tone added to a few areas. Keeping this very light and well blended as not a lot of this color is to show through the skin. It just shades the area where the Toddlers skin may be still thin. If the Toddler had a darker skin tone, I would probably not add in this color.
I used the Rebornfx blue wash and a small damp mop brush. I dotted these areas and then blended them into the skin; temple, around nose, a bit in ear, around ankles, bottom of feet, palms and around collar bone. I then added on some blushing with Rebornfx Pyrole Red 3 with a touch of Flesh 07 mixed in and about 20% water , diluent and open time. I added in the open time to give me a bit more time to blend this color in on larger areas. You can see the shaded and blushed areas in the pictures below;

 

 

With the Rebornfx Blue wash I also added in a very faint vein on both arms and enhanced some of the hand creases with the blush color.

   Next I added a thin layer of the blush color onto the lips. Let that layer dry then added in a bit more shading with a mixture of the blush and blue wash to equal a dark red/purple color. Notice the shaded areas in the next pictures using the blush and blush/blue mixtures.

ReBornFX Painting First Mottle step.

Toddlers do not usually have a lot of mottled skin coloring. Keeping this in mind I will only do one very transparent mottle color just to give some pink undertone and skin dimension. The color I chose was Rebornfx  Magenta 06. I added in 50% diluent, 20% distilled water and 30% paint emulsion to get a very transparent paint color. This is a nice purple pink color that worked well with the warm wash tone on my doll so far.  I also used a damp small hole plucked sponge to give the mottle effect I wanted.

I lightly and sparingly pounced this onto all the doll parts. I blended this color in on the face, palms, and on finger nails. I wanted the magenta color to enhance those areas but not in a mottled form.

I have tried to photograph the skin to show how subtle the mottling/ paint is.

Face features are not mottled. Magenta is blended in to create

a nice glow to the cheeks, ear lobes,

around eyes,nose and between lips.

The next step I applied my first crease color. This color is not the main crease color but more like a crease shading color to compliment the main crease color applied later on.  This first crease color is subtle but does make a difference. I used my Rebornfx Flesh 04 paint and added in about 20% of the Magenta 06 that I had used previously.

 







For applying I used a combination of brushes ; filbert, damp mini mop and liner (depending on the size of the crease being painted). To the paint color I added in 50% Diluent and a few drops of Open Time to allow more time to blend. Apply crease paint mixture to all crease areas, blending with the damp mop as you go. Don't forget to do around the fingernail edges, nostrils, and middle lip line.

In the next post I will do some small areas with a subtle blue undertones. Not to much of this in done on a Toddler.  Then I will start into my skin tones and finishing with enhancing details on the doll.
